When an e-Portfolio was reviewed as one of the requirements for our Applied Digital Learning class, I quickly thought of an Educational App I've used in the past with Elementary students, Seesaw. Seesaw allows students to digitally collect their completed work. They are able to showcase work and present what they have learned.
After reviewing Dr. Harapnuik's What is an E-portfolio ,I learned It's not just about collecting and presenting. An e-portfolio is "a learner's digital evidence of meaningful connections.' An e-portfolio allows you ownership and voice tailored to your authentic learning. As I begin to reflect on how I implemented Seesaw, I know now, there were many missed opportunities. Students did not truly have choice in the platform they used or what was to be included in their digital keeper. Choice, voice, and authentic work are what sets an e-portfolio apart from what I was doing. The work students collected on Seesaw, was more of assigned and completed work, An e-portfolio allows for a learner to dive deeper into their learning and should constantly be evolving. It should allow for ideas, discussion and reflection with a targeted audience.
As my journey in Graduate school continues, my e-portfolio will continue to evolve with new insight. There has already been a disruption within me as I am beginning to reflect on lessons, classroom culture and the environment students are currently working in. I need to provide my students with an authentic voice and meaningful connections. I am excited to see where this leads me. Reading Making Meaningful Connections in An Eportfolio, helped me connect some dots. Dr. Harapnuik said "Without a doubt the ability to connect the dots is a rare, prized and valuable." I must continue to push myself to connect the dot beause my students deserve it.
